Orsi Khaneh: Modernizing Iranian Traditional Architecture

The main concept of the Orsi Khaneh project stems from the traditional Iranian architecture, specifically the Orsi window. These windows, made of wooden lattice and stained glass, served as a means of controlling natural light and climate. Keivani Architects sought to modernize this traditional element, infusing the space with an Iranian spirit or Genius loci. The design highlights the importance of elements such as water, plants, and light.

What sets the Orsi Khaneh project apart is its ability to modernize a traditional architectural element. By incorporating the main spatial elements of Iranian traditional architecture, such as light, water, and plants, the design creates a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. The facade of the building features a double layer coverage of Thermowood and stained glass, which not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also helps regulate temperature. The balconies, framed with travertine boxes, are strategically placed to enhance the dynamics of the facade, adding a fourth dimension to the architecture.

The transparency principles and the play of light and color in the main entrance space draw inspiration from the renowned Borujerdiha house in Kashan, Iran. This attention to detail and utilization of framing techniques create a captivating experience for visitors. The Orsi Khaneh project is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design that Keivani Architects brings to their work.

The construction of the Orsi Khaneh building took place in Tehran from June 2013 to September 2015. The project faced challenges such as economic limitations and strict regulations, but these obstacles were overcome by using sustainable and native materials. The research conducted for this design focused on analyzing the architecture of Iranian traditional houses, with a particular emphasis on the role of vegetation, water, light, framing, and Orsi windows. The result is a practical and modern interpretation of Persian architecture and the concept of Genius loci.

The Orsi Khaneh project has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. In 2016, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
